Sthala Puranam
In days of yore, sage Markandeya was performing penance in the banks of river kaveri, flowing on the northern side of this village, a river holier than the Ganges itself. The Lord, pleased with the sage, appeared before the sage as a cowherd and began blowing the flute. Enthralled by the celestial melody of the flute, and with the help of his occult vision the sage realised that the singer is none other than the Lord. At once the sage fell at his feet. The Lord gave Darshan on Garuda on the Second day of the Tamil month thai. The Sage besieged the lord to give him his divine appearance in the reclining posture over adisesha, retaining the Same form as he revealed himself in srirangam. The lord obliged, with his face set towards srilanka in the South, reclined over adisesha in the east-west direction. In his ecstasy,Markandeyar sung in praise of the lord as follows:
Amirtha rasa jareenam Antharangair Apangaihi,
Avanantha janathayaha harshamankurayantham
kamapi jalathi kanya methini kanthamekam,
purushamahama pasyam poorvarange Sayanam
The Alwar feels as happy as he would be, when he gets the nector itself. According to the scripts, the inclined posture of the Lord is in four ways.
1. Yogam 2. Bhogam 3. Veeram 4. Virakam
The divine posture of the Lord Ranganathar here came to be hallowed as yogasayana with his visual efferent radiating and showering blessings to Boomadevi and Markandeya. Devotees hallow the mine planetary munificence, get redumption by worshiping this lord An offer of Naitheepam (lamp with Ghee) on Newmoorn day to Adisesha, will free us from the clutches of Raaghu Dosha. Success of Matrimonial allaiances and progeny for the belated marital couples do take place with the blessings of this lord when the affected people, take sacred bath in the puskarani here followed by workship of Adisesha offering blue colour vasthra and Blackgram rice prasadam. one is sure to be blessed with a child when one offers butter mixed with sugarcandy to the indwelling santhanakrishnan here
As per the Agama injunction, there are five tier deities in the temple.
1. Moolavar 2. Kowthukar, 3. Utsavar 4 Snapanabarer 5. Balibarer
Since the lord himself played on the flute to rejoice Markandeya, the utsavarmoorthy is named Aayanar. Like Srirangam, the Rajagopuram faces south. with high prakara wall, there is 3 tier Rajagopuram facing south. Just at the back of the temple is the Padmatheertham or the Lotus tank. The sturcture of the temple is very ancient in the Madakoil patterm with Garpagraha, Ardhamandapa, Mahamandapa, Sobhana mandapa, and Garuda Mandapa. Ahead the sanctum sanctorum is ananda vimanam. The paramapada vassal is in the North, a proto type depiction of srirangam.
Perumal sannadi is nearly 15 feet high with Thiruvanaazhi prakaram. In course of the Adyayana utsavam, for the first tendays, that is during the pahalpathu, the lord starts the procession by first rounding the Thiruvennazhi. For the later tendays, the procession is completed along with Thiruvennaazhi.
OTHER SANNADIS
This Sacreed temple also enshrines the sannadis of Lord Rama and Krishna. To the right of the Mahamandapam is srirama and to the left is srikrishna. The moolavars are nearly five feet high and the uthsavars 2 feet. This is something very rare. We can find Lord sugreeva also with srirama. Such like rare deities are found in five places namely kelaiyur, the Ramar Temple near Thanjavur Punnainallur Mariamman Kovil, Vaduvur, Thalaignayeru, and Thillaivilakkam.
The Structural beauty encompasses dancing Krishna and Santhanakrishna. The spctacles are of enchanting beauty. Gopalakrishnan wears a big golden stud in one of his ears, trying to embrace the pinnamaram.
The Presence of our revered preceptors Sri Namalvar, Sri Thirumangai Alwar, Sri Ramanujar and Sri. Nigamanda maha Desikan, both in the Moolavar and utsavar, form add auspecious attribute to the shrine. Gaurding the Mahamandapam we are received by 7 feet high Dwarapalaka. The downward steps from sobhana mandapam lead to the Thayar sannadi at the right. It is believed that the Goddess performed penance on the banks of the temple tank and got wedded to the lord and the marriage took place in a village Thirumanangudi by name just a kilometre from here. For getting married and begetting children people vow to this Goddess, and they offer bangles to the Goddess during the bangling function of the expectant lady, having got their vows fulfilled; and after the birth of the child they offer a cradle to the Thayar. The Balaeanjanyar in the leftern side of the Thayar sannadi is highly benevolent and immediately answers all our prayers made to him. People offer Vadamalai garland, betel leaves, butter, Ramanama malai and sesamon rice for the Balaanjaneyar. When there is drought an offer of 108 pots of water to this Anjaneya with sincere prayers for rain has never failed till date.
Proto type of Thayasannathi is the three tier Gopura Andal Sannadhi in the North. In the North west of the prakaram is the yagasalai. As in Srirangam, the vishwaksenar Sannadi is in the eastern part Uthsavar iodl of vishvakusa also adorns the temple besides Ranganath paduka. Just opposit to the sanctum sanctorum is a sannadhi with vimanam for Garuda, a loftly thwajasthambam and balipeedam. In the Southeast side is the Thirumadappali and inthe southwest are sri Desikan sannadi with vimanam and separate sannadi for Alwars and Achayras. On the right side of the prakarm is a sannadi for Thumbikkai Alwar. He holds a single fruit in his tusk. This is something noteworthy.
